Overview

Work with Mental Health/Disabilities Senior Manager to prepare and track disabilities and mental health referrals. Establish rapport with staff to assure appropriate screenings and services for children with disabilities and/or mental health issues are provided. Conducts classroom and/or home observations to provide recommendations to staff and families.  Provides direct support of children and families, as needed. Monitors classrooms for preschool, infants and toddler development; support the part C referral for infants and toddlers with parents and staff, and part B referrals for preschoolers.

Responsibilities

  • Tracks initial concerns of children and ensures on-going follow-up using Child Plus.
  • Assists parents and staff to identify development concerns of children and give recommendations using a mentoring model.
  • Supports parents and staff with completion of referral forms to appropriate LEA for possible evaluations and services.
  • Assists with mental health referrals for children as needed.
  • Monitors progress of disability and mental health referrals.
  • Attends monthly case review meetings at centers as assigned.
  • Reviews IFSP’s to mentor Family Educators for implementation in home visits.
  • Reviews all applications for mental health disabilities concerns with Mental Health/Disabilities Team.
  • Supports transition activities from Part C and B for children.
  • Links parents to community support services as needed.
  • Works cooperatively with the community mental health consultants to obtain mental health services for children.
  • Assists with providing services to children in the interim period while children are in the disabilities and/or mental health referral process.
  • Imparts recommendations to staff regarding requirements of children with mental health needs.
  • Assists parents in discussions with local education agency representatives.
  • Provides mental health information to parents.
  • Attends IEP/IFSP/PIP meetings as a representative of Child Start Head Start 0-5 Program as needed.
  • Serves as a mentor and support person for staff.
  • Works with Mental Health consultants to ensure implementation of social-emotional training.
  • Notifies staff of mental health resources in the community.

Qualifications

Associate Degree (A.A.) in Early Childhood, Social Work or related field.

Two to three years experience in early childhood and ability to impart developmentally appropriate practice to others.

Experience with computer databases.

Experience with children with disabilities and/or experience in a mental health setting preferred.

Working knowledge of standard practices and procedures. 

Advanced interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain internal and external client relationships.

Ability to explore alternatives and creative solutions to meet the needs of the customer.
